 意大利導(dǎo)演費(fèi)德里克．費(fèi)里尼的中期經(jīng)典作《八部半》是其成熟高峰期作品，此后開始走向糜爛而至腐敗，偏于肉欲放縱和自我沉溺，像《費(fèi)里尼之薩蒂尼康》（六九年）和本片，都是糜爛頹廢的出色力作。本片反映了十八世紀(jì)基督道德不振后的上流腐化放縱，費(fèi)里尼盡情借題發(fā)揮，展現(xiàn)出精英文藝在人欲橫流下的腐爛情態(tài)。大情人卡薩諾華是在情場屢戰(zhàn)屢勝的“性斗士"，不斷獵艷，還參加造愛競賽。但這大情人苦于人人只重他的性愛能力，不重視他經(jīng)世濟(jì)民治國的才學(xué)。而且女人們對他都“有性無愛"，當(dāng)他衰老得失去性魅力之后，就只能把一個(gè)機(jī)械女人當(dāng)作夢中情人，很可悲可憐。

　　故事發(fā)生在20世紀(jì)的30年代，雷（西恩·潘 Sean Penn 飾）是當(dāng)時(shí)紅極一時(shí)的爵士樂傳奇人物。由于早年生活困頓，成名后雷養(yǎng)成了揮金如土的惡習(xí)，壓抑許久的他放縱自己迷失在由金錢和美女組成的奢侈世界里?！　∫晃幻泻５伲ㄋ_曼莎·莫頓 Samantha Morton 飾）的普通洗衣女工深深的愛上了雷，愿意為雷付出一切，而雷亦對單純的海蒂抱有好感?？墒?，此時(shí)的雷并不想過早的走入安定的家庭生活，更何況，雷可是一位藝術(shù)家啊，對于藝術(shù)家來說，婚姻難道不正是靈感的墳?zāi)箚?？就這樣，雷和海蒂漸行漸遠(yuǎn)。之后，雷娶了性感妖嬈的作家布蘭奇（烏瑪·瑟曼 Uma Thurman 飾），卻發(fā)現(xiàn)布蘭奇是比自己還要放浪形骸的“交際花”。直到此時(shí)，雷才想起了海蒂的好，可是雷沒有把握，這個(gè)單純可愛的女孩如今還會一如既往的包容他，接納他嗎？
