華萊士·比里,切斯特·莫里斯,羅伯特·蒙哥馬利肯特·馬洛（蒙哥馬利·克里夫特 飾）因酒駕而入獄，并在牢中認(rèn)識(shí)了搶劫犯約翰·摩根（切斯特·莫里斯 飾）和殺人犯機(jī)關(guān)槍布奇（華萊士·比里 飾）。性格軟弱的馬洛入獄第一晚便遭到了布奇的欺凌，隨后他與其他獄友也無法和諧相處，心懷不滿的他在警察密探的慫恿下想要通過抓住布奇和摩根的把柄的方式來提前出獄。性格暴躁的布奇無法忍受牢中惡劣的飲食條件，在餐廳慫恿所有犯人一起抗議，最終遭到壓制，布奇也因此被送往地牢，但他心中已打定主意要設(shè)法越獄。摩根性格狡猾，在獄中一直左右逢源，并因在獄中表現(xiàn)良好得到了提前出獄的假釋機(jī)會(huì)，就在他喜不勝收準(zhǔn)備出獄之時(shí)，某個(gè)突然而來的事件永遠(yuǎn)改變了他的命運(yùn)。
