20世紀(jì)歐美文學(xué)《榆樹下的欲望》是奧尼爾的代表作之一，也是一部廣受關(guān)注的戲劇，有些論者認(rèn)為它是;美國第一部偉大的悲劇這部悲劇像奧尼爾許多其他作品一樣圍繞著家庭矛盾展開。年過70的卡伯特是個固執(zhí)的老農(nóng)，他當(dāng)年沒有加入去西部淘金的狂潮，而是留在東部從沙礫地中開出了一片農(nóng)田。他和兩任前妻生了三個兒子，卻一個都不愛，待他們很苛刻。小兒子伊本特別恨父親奪走了母親的財產(chǎn)，他為了達(dá)到將來獨(dú)占產(chǎn)業(yè)的目的，誘使兩個同父異母的哥哥偷盜了父親一筆藏款后離家出走。老卡伯特從城里娶來一個叫艾比的年輕女人，目的是再生一個讓自己滿意的繼承人。年輕的繼母對伊本多方挑逗，意在借種生子謀奪家產(chǎn)，伊本經(jīng)不住誘惑與之發(fā)生關(guān)系。艾比生子后，老卡伯特大喜過望，宣布嬰兒將是田莊的主人。伊本痛詆艾比的陰謀，而艾比已真的愛上伊本，為表真心，竟將嬰兒殺死。伊本向警局報案后，又被艾比的真情感動，不忍讓她獨(dú)自受死，遂自承同謀與艾比同赴刑場。老卡伯特還是沒有繼承人，只能一邊埋怨上帝，一邊繼續(xù)耕作。
