瑪利亞（朱麗·安德魯斯 飾）是一個(gè)年輕活潑的修女，喜歡在大自然下高聲歌唱，所以她常常忘記了修道院里的規(guī)矩。院長認(rèn)為瑪利亞并不屬于規(guī)矩嚴(yán)格的修道院。院長與眾嬤嬤商量后，決定安排瑪利亞到一位名叫特拉普（克里斯托弗·普盧默 飾）上校家當(dāng)家庭教師。上校的妻子去世多年，留下7個(gè)孩子，他要求對(duì)孩子嚴(yán)格管教。他告訴瑪利亞在他家的家庭教師都做不長久，都是因?yàn)楹⒆拥膼鹤鲃 ，斃麃喒灰苍獾搅藧鹤鲃?，可是這位善良的老師并沒有告訴他們的父親，而是像個(gè)母親一樣照顧孩子，很快跟孩子打成一片。上校也漸漸在瑪利亞的引導(dǎo)下改變了對(duì)孩子們的態(tài)度。上校與瑪利亞之間發(fā)生了感情，他們完婚后回到了已被納粹占領(lǐng)的奧地利，上校并不想為納粹辦事，一家人準(zhǔn)備逃跑……

影片以重復(fù)加碎片式的感官敘事手法，講述了年邁且身患疾病的安東尼（安東尼·霍普金斯 Anthony Hopkins 飾）正在面臨一項(xiàng)艱難的人生選擇——是搬到養(yǎng)老院還是接受女兒尋找的新護(hù)工。在這個(gè)過程中，安東尼發(fā)現(xiàn)自己仿佛進(jìn)入了一場(chǎng)奇怪的時(shí)空之旅，錯(cuò)亂的記憶和時(shí)間線交織出一段段匪夷所思的故事，而一個(gè)個(gè)陌生又熟悉的人也讓他陷入迷茫。影片根據(jù)法國小說家兼劇作家佛羅萊恩·澤勒的舞臺(tái)劇《父親》改編。
