1865年，流浪漢Timothee來到法國南部的一個(gè)村子，假裝自己是聾啞人住了下來，他被村里一位美麗的女子約瑟芬深深迷住了，為了接近她，他向約瑟芬的父親休斯醫(yī)生乞討，好客的休斯醫(yī)生果然邀他到家共進(jìn)晚餐，席間，他耍了一些奇怪的把戲糊弄住了約瑟芬。第二天，趁約瑟芬獨(dú)自在家時(shí)，他溜進(jìn)房間將約瑟芬催眠，被一種邪乎的力量驅(qū)使，盡管約瑟芬對(duì)他又厭惡又恐懼，但還是跟隨他來到了一片叢林的深處，在這里約瑟芬飽受羞辱和虐待，直到流浪漢被逮捕和審判。讓村民們好奇的是，驅(qū)使約瑟芬跟隨流浪漢前往叢林中的力量到底是什么呢？
